Senegal Player Ratings: Mendy fails to hold on in World Cup disappointment against Netherlands - World Cup Update

Senegal produced a good account of themselves before a late collapse, mainly due to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s two errors which saw them lose 2-0 to the Netherlands on Monday.

It was a disappointing end to a game that the Teranga Lions looked like they would get a point, after keeping the Dutch at bay for most of the contest.

However, winger Ismaila Sarr, preferred on the left in place of the injured Sadio Mane, provided a silver lining for Senegal. GOAL rates how the Teranga Lions players performed.

  • Edouard Mendy (2/10):

The Chelsea goalkeeper had little to do for most of the game but came up short when called into action. Mendy handed the Netherlands all three points as it was from his two errors that Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen scored for the Dutch late on.

    Kalidou Koulibaly (5/10):

The captain did not have a good game, losing his markers on numerous occasions and would have allowed Virgil van Dijk to score from a corner in the second half had the Liverpool defender not headed wide.

  • The right-back struggled against Gakpo in the entire contest and would have seen the Dutch score an easy goal on the stroke of halftime when poor communication with Mendy nearly allowed the Dutch forwards onto a loose ball.
