Senegal starting XI vs Qatar: Teranga Lions keep faith in Mendy - World Cup Update
Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse has named a starting XI to face World Cup hosts Qatar for their second Group A game at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Friday.
Both sides are looking for their first win in the competition following opening day defeats. The Teranga Lions were beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands, while Qatar were outwitted by Ecuador.
Although his two errors gave the Netherlands chances to score the winning goals, Cisse has not dropped the Chelsea goalkeeper.
Sabaly was quite solid against the Dutch and retains his place at right-back.
He suffered muscle cramps on Monday, but the defender is fit to face the hosts in a must win game for Senegal.
He will revert to his usual centre-back role alongside Kalidou Koulibaly.
Being an experienced centre-back, much is expected of the Chelsea defender as Teranga Lions hope to recover from the opening day loss.
He came on for Abdou Diallo in the opening game and has now been promoted to the starting left-back.
His forays forward can trouble Qatar.
He worked hard to frustrate the Dutch in the midfield and was yellow-carded in the sixth minute of the extra time.
Mendy is expected to remain firm and dominate the midfield in order to give Senegal an extra fighting edge in the showdown.
Gueye received a yellow card during their contest against the Netherlands.
He'll be aware again that another booking would mean a suspension.
Diatta will again lead Senegal’s attacks from the right wing, just as he did in their opening assignment.
