Roma striker, Tammy Abraham has insisted it’s an ‘honour’ that Portugal want to hire Jose Mourinho as their new manager.

Portugal are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Fernando Santos following their 2022 World Cup exit in Qatar.

There have been rumours since Santos departure that the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager could combine the Portugal job with his current one at Roma.

Mourinho has also been linked with the Brazil job along with the Portugal role following Tite quitting his role just two hours after their 2022 World Cup quarter-final exit to Croatia.

The 25-year-old striker is not surprised by his boss being linked with numerous international jobs, although he is keen for Mourinho to remain at the Serie A side.

Abraham told Gazzetta dello Sport: ‘He is a great coach and of course, everyone wants him. It’s an honour that an important country like Portugal chases him.

‘I am sure the coach is focused on Roma. We’ve read many things, but we didn’t talk about them and Mourinho has always tried to make us improve, we are focused on the season.’

Santos was manager of Portugal for eight years and led them to success back at Euro 2016.

The Portuguese Football Federation though decided to make a change after their shock defeat to Morocco, as they now focus on Euro 2024.

The England international also admitted that Mourinho is ‘like an uncle’ to him since his arrival at Roma.

He added: ‘I already said it in the past, to me, having him here is like having an uncle.

‘That’s how I’ve always seen the coach. He is a reference point and he wants the best from me, so he motivates me in every way.

‘He tells me when I don’t play well and even when I do so, he is not satisfied.

‘That’s what I need. A coach who always guides me.’
