Tempus Fugit! How Time Flies Indeed! - World Cup Update

When France and Croatia filed out for the 2018 World Cup final in Russia emerging as Champions and runners up respectively, the next edition billed four years later in Qatar looked like a century away.

The Four years looked quite long a time, but then four years gradually shrank  into two years, a year and then into months weeks, days and finally hours and minutes.

So when the 2022 World Cup kickoff on November 17 in Qatar, the first time it would be holding at that period of the year away from the conventional May-June-July belt it brought to the fore that four years have rolled by just like this.

Qualifiers to the Qatar world Cup saw many contenders and pretenders fall by the way side.  At the last count 32 countries survived the heat to berth in Qatar to battle for the trophy considered the summit of soccer competition on the globe.

Can France defend their title today ?

The World watched as usual as countries including past winners Brazil, Spain, Germany, Uruguay and England fell by the way side on the way to the final. The equally watched as five African countries Cameroon, Senegal, Tunisia, Ghana battled and lost out leaving only Morocco to carry the baton to the last four, making history as the first African country to get to the semifinal and first to make it to the fourth place after losing 2-1 to Croatia in the third place play-off.

Today another final is taking the Centre stage. Interestingly  and commendably France who emerged champions in 2018 made it all the way to the final with intent to defend the title and join the exclusive club of Countries who won and defended the World cup back to back, viz Brazil and Italy.

Whether they can achieve that ambition, will be brought to the fore today, but they must first overcome an equally ambitious Argentina, in search of both national and personal honour.

will Messi achieve his ambition tonight ?

National honour for Argentina in search of third World Cup title and personal honour for one of the greatest players now dubbed magical Lionel Messi Who has won everything in his career with only one missing, the World Cup.

Will his tenacity and magic grant him both personal and national honour today, or will France be a stumbling block to the  ambition of this multiple Ballon d Or winner who is perhaps hoping to retire from international football with the world cup as parting gift?

The interesting thing about football is that amidst all the boastings and bragging rights, statistics and pedigree action on the pitch for 90 minutes, 120minutes or even extension to usually unpalatable penalty shootout ultimately ends it all and a winner must emerge.

Where do you think the pendulum will swing tonight?

Who will have the last laugh, The Albicelestes or Les Blues?

Today is here already and the waiting is over.
