Manchester City moved a bit closer to the Premier League leaders, Arsenal after obtaining the three points at stake against Chelsea on Thursday.

Mahrez 63rd ‘minutes goal was all Man City needed to climb up to 39 points from 36 to forge ahead in the series.

It was a day everything went wrong for Chelsea who had in possession quality attackers that would have made the difference during the all-important duel.

None of the newsly acquired strikers could save Chelsea who have yet to recover from the last season’s management crisis.

A list of strikers who haven’t worked out at Chelsea – Crespo, Kezman, Mutu, Shevchenko, Pizarro, Pato, Torres, Remy, Morata, Higuain, Lukaku, Batshuayi, Werner, now Aubameyang. What it is about Chelsea that wastes so many good strikers?

Graham Potter is an excellent manager but Chelsea was not the club for him. Entitled fanbase and the club that has no interest in the type of project that would see him succeed. He won’t get the patience he requires/deserves.

The reigning champions struggled in the first half before two of manager Pep Guardiola’s substitutes combined to break the deadlock after 63 minutes, Riyad Mahrez turning in Jack Grealish’s low cross at the far post.

Chelsea enjoyed the better of the first half despite adding both former City forward Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic to a lengthening injury list, substitute Carney Chukwuemeka hitting the post from the edge of the area.

Graham Potter will justifiably point to Chelsea’s ill-luck with absentees but the bottom line is this defeat leaves them in the unaccustomed position of 10th, 10 points off the Champions League places.

City, meanwhile, will be happy to get three points despite being nowhere near their best and on a rare night when scoring machine Erling Haaland failed to hit the target.
