Roma Director Pinto Believes Mourinho Is Going Nowhere! - Legit Sports
Roma director Tiago Pinto believes his manager Jose Mourinho is going nowhere, following heavy links to him replacing Fernando Santos as Portugal boss.
Mourinho’s contract in Rome runs until 2024, however, the 59-year-old has been earmarked as a candidate for the vacant Portugal post, following Fernando Santos’ sacking after the World Cup.
The speculation on his future wasn’t a distraction for Mourinho during the club’s warm weather break in Portugal and Pinto believes it’s only natural for his manager to be linked with the job.
But during an interview with La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Pinto said Mourinho’s future lies in the Italian capital.
‘When you get a coach like Mourinho, you must be accustomed to rumours.’ The Roma director said.
‘This was the first time in 18 months that a club or a Federation were interested in him. We had no distractions in Algarve, we were only focused on work. I am Portuguese and every time we change coach, Mourinho is mentioned, but we count on him for the future.
Jose Mourinho’s immediate focus is his desire to add a new centre-back to his Roma side. However, despite him being vocal about adding a defender since the summer, the request is being hindered by the club’s Financial Fair Play situation.
Tiago admits Roma will do their best to meet his coaches demands although they must deal within UEFA’s FFP rules.
‘I’ve always said that I agree with him.’ said Pinto on the subject of adding a new centre-half to the squad.
‘We played with a three-man defence, but we only have four centre backs and we’d need five. Technically, every new signing depends on who’s leaving.
This interview allows me to say that it’s not easy to operate within the FFP parameters which we’ll have to follow over the next four years.’
Roma was bought by the Friedkin family in 2020, and Pinto was appointed director of the club the following year. Since investing in the club, the family have signed a number of high profile players, and hired Jose Mourinho as manager.
Pinto has overseen been some big name arrivals in Rome already this season including Paulo Dybala in the summer
This summer saw names including Paulo Dybala and Nemanja Matic join the club, but Pinto admits they can’t always get everything that is required by their coach.
‘We’ve signed 14 players in the last year and a half, the Friedkin have invested €150m in the market since they arrived. Last year [2021] Roma were the team that spent the most in Serie A, circa €90m including Tammy Abraham for €40m.
